
Tipping points are a major cause for concern because, once crossed, they trigger positive feedback loops that amplify the effects of climate change or ecological degradation.
That is why we are drawing attention to tipping points.
Today, we are discussing the risks associated with tipping points; these risks are real and potentially existential.
Tipping points – in the Amazon, Antarctic, coral reefs and more – could cause fundamental parts of the Earth system to change dramatically, irreversibly and with devastating effects.
If a tipping point were reached in the Atlantic Ocean—specifically regarding the AMOC—we could lose more than half of the world’s arable land used for staple crops. This would trigger water security crises and severely disrupt monsoons in West Africa and India, thereby affecting billions of people.
We must rise to the challenge posed by these risks: understanding them better, assessing how close we are to them, and determining the appropriate response measures. Even if we cannot prevent these events from occurring, we can take action to reduce the vulnerability of exposed populations.
We felt it was crucial to communicate about this risk, and the timing is right. We are therefore attempting to fill this gap in assessments while making the information accessible. There is strong public demand for this.
