Investments for Climate Adaptation

By admin3485, 2 November 2025

The physical impacts of climate change are already being felt, with record-breaking extreme heatwaves, droughts, and forest fires: 2025 was the hottest year ever recorded, with a global average near-surface temperature 1.45°C above pre-industrial levels.
Losses from weather- and climate-related disasters reached 281 billion USD that year, most of which were uninsured. Climate-related losses will continue to rise as climate change progresses, with extreme events becoming increasingly frequent and severe, and slow-onset changes becoming ever more apparent.

As the severity of these risks grows, there is a danger of abrupt price revaluations and the "stranding" of assets—for instance, when property owners are no longer able to secure affordable insurance coverage. A disorderly transition in the face of mounting physical climate risks would have serious socio-economic consequences for employment, health, productivity, and public finances.

Greater public and private investment will be required in activities that help mitigate damage or capture potential opportunities arising from the impacts of climate change—known as "adaptation investments"—such as the development of climate-resilient infrastructure, food systems, and supply chains. Adaptation investments are both economically and socially beneficial. While the specific gains will depend on the context, there is a significant opportunity for economically attractive investment; one study identified 1.8 trillion USD in potential adaptation investments, with benefit-cost ratios ranging from 2:1 to 10:1.
