Global sustainable aquaculture
Sustainable aquaculture has the potential to provide sufficient, healthy, and nutrient-rich food for a global population projected to exceed nine billion people by 2050.
The Guidelines for Sustainable Aquaculture (the Guidelines) aim to support this effort; they represent the first international instrument dedicated entirely to this vital sector.
These Guidelines were developed through consensus within a global consultative process spanning eight years. They serve as a tool to guide policymaking, inform decision-making, and facilitate action at local, national, regional, and global levels.
The Guidelines encompass a set of agreed-upon principles and practices that countries and stakeholders can use to ensure their aquaculture activities foster food security and good nutrition, equitable livelihoods, ecosystem restoration, and resilience to climate change.
