Mud Tsunami in Nepal

 The collapse of a massive glacier, 600 meters wide, is believed to have triggered a mud tsunami in Nepal that killed hundreds of people.
The collapse of a glacier in the Nepalese Himalayas, near the border with Chinese-controlled Tibet, appears to be the cause of the disaster. This latest catastrophe exemplifies the cascading effects of climate change increasingly observed around the world.
A huge block of ice broke off from a glacier at an altitude of approximately 5,200 meters and fell into a valley, explained Simon Cox, a scientist at the New Zealand institute GNS Science, in an interview with Agence France-Presse. It then transformed into a raging mass of debris […] sweeping away rocks, sediment, trees, and anything else in its path before rushing through the canyon, he continued. The glacier collapse was so violent that it was mistakenly recorded as a magnitude 5.2 seismic event occurring at 8:37 a.m. local time. Following analysis, the United States Geological Survey determined that the seismic event was actually a glacial collapse accompanied by a debris flow, and that no earthquake had occurred. Climate change creates conditions that can destabilize rock and ice in high-mountain areas, increasing the risk of disasters like this one—though it is currently difficult to quantify the extent to which it contributed to the recent events in Nepal and Tibet.
The long-term trend is concerning. In 2023, the United Nations reported that global warming had caused the loss of nearly a third of the ice cover on Nepal’s snow-capped mountains in just over 30 years. It also noted at the time that Nepal’s glaciers had melted 65% faster over the preceding decade than during the decade before that.
