{"id":289,"date":"2018-03-01T18:41:37","date_gmt":"2018-03-01T17:41:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/actforyourplanet.com\/?p=289"},"modified":"2026-05-22T23:35:31","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T21:35:31","slug":"choices-influencing-food-access","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/actforyourplanet.com\/index.php\/2018\/03\/01\/choices-influencing-food-access\/","title":{"rendered":"Choices influencing food access"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Food access:\u00a0 food supply and food security<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Have you ever considered that you\u2019re not the only one who decides what food ends up on your plate?<\/p>\n<p>How can we discern dilemmas at household, local, national and international levels get the big picture when the connections between levels and actors regarding access to food have been unraveled.\u00a0Each scale is important to understand actors\u2019 choices influencing food access.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why the choices you make have been predestined?<\/strong><br \/>\nWe need to imagine what it takes to provide access to a safe and nutritious food supply every day.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-295 alignleft\" style=\"color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;\" src=\"http:\/\/actforyourplanet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/enfants-l\u00e9gume--300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"296\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/actforyourplanet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/enfants-l\u00e9gume--300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/actforyourplanet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/enfants-l\u00e9gume-.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 296px) 100vw, 296px\" \/>If we all do our bit by making smart choices we\u2019ll get to enjoy feasting on the bounty from \u201cthe breadbasket of the world\u201d for a long time to come!<\/p>\n<p>Food manufacturing has changed during the past century, depends on social and economic dynamics at the household level for everyone.Is shaped at a local level by the interactions between traders, retailers, producers and buyers in the markets is influenced on a national scale by politics and policies by negotiating and aligning goals, instruments, and modes of governance is impacted by debates and negotiations creating conditions in food trade by international organizations.<\/p>\n<p>The question often gets asked, \u201cWhat does sustainable food mean exactly?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most people seem to agree that when it comes to farming, cooking and eating, sustainable is a good thing. But it also seems to mean something a little different depending on who you ask.<\/p>\n<p>So let\u2019s look at an official definition for farming. \u201cSustainable agriculture\u201d was addressed by Congress in the 1990 \u201cFarm Bill.\u201d Under that law, the term sustainable agriculture means an integrated system of plant and animal production practices having a site-specific application that will, over the long term:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Satisfy human food and fiber needs.<\/li>\n<li>Enhance environmental quality and the natural resource base upon which the agricultural economy depends.<\/li>\n<li>Make the most efficient use of nonrenewable resources and on-farm resources and integrate, where appropriate, natural biological cycles and controls.<\/li>\n<li>Sustain the economic viability of farm operations.<\/li>\n<li>Enhance the quality of life for farmers and society as a whole<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We heartily endorse those goals and practices for sustainable farms and we\u2019d like to make some additions for everyone who shops for food, cooks it up, and loves eating well as much as we do.<\/p>\n<p>Consumers play an important role in determining the health of the environment we inhabit and the one our children will be living in after we\u2019re gone. It\u2019s important for people to know about the source of the foods they consume; how it\u2019s grown, raised, caught and prepared.<\/p>\n<p>Knowledgeable consumers can make choices that support sustainable agriculture, humane practices for raising poultry and livestock, and the responsible harvesting of seafood. We want people to buy from those whose conservation practices protect the health of the environment.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just a healthy environment, nutritious eating and great taste that makes us seek sustainable food.
