Antalya: UN talks to be held next month against a backdrop of energy crisis, extreme heat, and flooding in Nepal
COP31 will open in the coastal city of Antalya on November 9, bringing together 197 countries as they face record global temperatures, mounting climate-related damage, and growing pressure to move away from the planet-warming fossil fuels.

While Türkiye was chosen as the host nation, the marathon negotiations will be led by Australia—a unique arrangement reached after both countries submitted bids to host the premier global climate gathering.

What voluntary climate commitments are expected on the sidelines of COP31?

Beyond the core objective of electrification, Türkiye is spearheading a series of voluntary initiatives covering areas such as artificial intelligence, the reduction of methane and waste, and the development of climate-resilient cities.

These non-binding commitments are set to be part of a separate « action agenda, » running in parallel to the formal COP discussions—where decisions are reached by consensus and every line of the text must be approved by all participating countries.

This year, the hard-fought negotiations involve few topics likely to capture major media attention, focusing instead on technical issues carried over from previous conferences.
