The average global sea-surface temperature hit 20.96\u00b0C, surpassing the previous record set in 2023.<br \/>\nOcean heat has reached exceptionally high levels across much of the tropical Pacific\u2014an area where current conditions associated with the natural El Ni\u00f1o climate cycle (which tends to warm waters and global temperatures while fueling extreme events like droughts and floods) are expected to intensify further in the coming months.<br \/>\n\u00ab\u00a0However, the primary driver of this warming\u2014as we know\u2014lies in the greenhouse gases humanity emits into the atmosphere,\u00a0\u00bb he adds.<br \/>\nAlready, waters around Europe\u2014specifically in the western Mediterranean and along the Atlantic coast\u2014are experiencing unusually high temperatures this July, accompanied by marine heatwaves.<br \/>\nEl Ni\u00f1o events typically peak at the end of the year, when heat accumulated in the ocean is released into the atmosphere, driving up global temperatures.<br \/>\nThe previous El Ni\u00f1o event contributed to making 2023 and 2024 the second and first hottest years on record, respectively.<br \/>\n*Carlo Buontempo, Director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The El Ni\u00f1o phenomenon occurs in the tropical Pacific Ocean roughly every five years.
