At full capacity, Stratos would require a staggering 9 gigawatts (GW) of power—more than double the average electricity consumption of the entire state of Utah, which hovers around 4 GW.

In some respects, this conflict serves as a microcosm of the broader debate surrounding AI. While wealthy developers make grand promises about the technology’s benefits, many local residents are deeply concerned about the consequences of this race to build a revolutionary technology—one they may not even want, and in which they have little to no say.

In Utah, public opposition is intensifying against this colossal data center project.

Researchers warn that the deployment of such massive AI infrastructure could, in the short term, lead to localized thermal overheating and drive up electricity costs for local residents.

Artificial intelligence is draining the region’s resources.

Because the public power grid cannot withstand such a shock, the developers plan to build their own private thermal power plant. This facility would be fueled directly by the Ruby Pipeline—a vast natural gas pipeline that spans several states in the American West. On paper, the pitch sounds appealing: the servers would not draw « a single electron » from the local power supply. In reality, however, this energy sleight-of-hand merely shifts the problem elsewhere. To spin the turbines at its power plant and supply energy to its AI chips, the campus will burn 12.7 billion cubic meters [of gas] annually, according to calculations by the NGO Utah Clean Energy. That is one and a half times the total annual consumption of the state of Utah, including both residential and industrial use.

and energy campus initiative located in Hansel Valley, in the western part of Box Elder County, Utah.
